Moving stinks. Everyone hates the hassle. Unless you’re a psychopath. You’ve completed the physical move of your possessions from your old place to your new home. You need a physical break. Now what?
There are sooo many change of addresses you need to take care of and you don’t know if you’re missing anything! Don’t sweat it. Here is a post-move moving checklist for you to review.
Mail Forwarding: First thing you want to take care of is setting up mail forwarding at the post office. That way, any important mail you receive at your old address should be forwarded to your new address. You can set this up for up to one year here. While you’re at it, you can change your voter registration as well. Best part of this is that it’s only $1.10!
Employment-Related: Next thing you want to take care of is anything employment-related. You don’t want to make sure important documents make it to you. This can include:
- Payroll Information
- Health Insurance
- Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)
- Health Savings Accounts (HSA)
- 401k
- Pension Plans
- Stock Options
If you’re lucky, your company has all the software integrated, so you only need to update your address in a few places. Otherwise, you’ll need to go into each application and update it yourself.
Finance-Related: Next up is all your finance-related stuff. I listed some common (and some uncommon) ones below
- Checking Accounts
- Savings Accounts
- Brokerage Accounts
- Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA)
- Credit Cards
- Loan Servicing Accounts (Home Mortgage, Student Loans, etc)
- 529 Education Savings Plan Accounts
- Treasury Direct Account
- Government Assistance-Related Accounts
- Cryptocurrency Investing Accounts
Food Delivery Apps: I list this relatively high because you’ll likely be doing a lot of food delivery over the next week as you unpack. It would be a major buzzkill if you accidentally order a bunch of food to your old place.
E-Commerce and Subscriptions: Another buzzkill would be to send an Amazon order to your old address. Be sure to update Amazon. Now’s a good time to go through all your online subscriptions as well to see what you really need. You’ll need to update your billing zip code for these services so payments don’t get declined. If you’re an old-school person, make sure to update your newspaper subscriptions as well.
Utilities: Make sure all your utilities at your old place are cancelled and that you have internet, electricity, gas, and water set up for your new home.
Travel: Be sure to update your vehicle registration, airline apps, and global entry with your new address.
Memberships: If you have a costco or fitness membership, be sure to update those. Not a high priority, but it’s good to keep everything updated
I hope you found it helpful going through this list! If you have anything to add or you would like to suggest any content or tools, please comment below! I am pretty tech-savvy so no ask is too big.
